Automation Engineer Job Description

Ion Storage Systems creates batteries that are safer, lighter, and enable form factors with tighter packing density that enhance system performance. We are looking to add a full-time Automation Engineer to our team in Beltsville, MD. This position will have a significant role in the development of Ion's first pilot line by supporting all automated manufacturing processes including converting, pick-and-place, and pouch sealing.

Responsibilities:

Automate assembly of rechargeable lithium metal batteries.

Calculate machine loads. Select motors and motion controllers.

Assemble, connect, and link automation with mechanical equipment.

Design and program efficient tool paths.

Troubleshoot to root cause failures.

Maintain timely documentation.

Drive outcomes. Negotiate then commit to schedule.

Manage suppliers to deliver quality on time.

Be accountable. Communicate proactively. Navigate obstacles.

Required Experience:

2-5 years of direct, hands-on automation experience.

1 year manufacturing automation.

Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent.

Required Skills:

Hands-on electromechanical assembly.

Basic electrical wiring for lights, motors and controls.

Installing and operating electronic pick-and-place machines

Programming automation controllers.

Design for Manufacturing DFM

Familiarity with CAD software such as Solidworks or Creo


Preferred Skills:


Manufacturing parts in dry rooms or clean rooms.

Electronic test equipment including DMM and oscilloscope.

Robot, hacker, maker, radio control hobbyist

Secondary batteries like lithium-ion
